Prepare yourself for another post in our Crafty Chaos series...
As you probably know by now, my sister is a huge Harry Potter fan, and she's been building a very book-ish theme throughout her yard. So after spending a couple of years unsuccessfully truying to grow plants in a little bird bath in her backyeard...it finally felt like a no-brainer to pivot.
Instead of fighting with plants that clearly didn't want to live there, she decided to turn the bird bath into a Harry Potter fairy garden instead.
Honestly? Way more on brand.
She's still in the early stages — there are only a couple of pieces in it so far — but we thought it would be fun to share the first additions, including our very first attempt at working with resin.
She started by buying a small castle — her "Hogwarts" — that was made for an aquarium (purchased on Amazon). This felt like a perfect choice since a little rain or snow won't hurt it.
To help secure it in the bird bath during windstorms, she cut down a small piece of rebar and placed it underneath the base of the castle. Practical and magical. We love a stable wizarding structure.

The Pensive DIY
For our first handmade piece, we decided to make a pensive — big thanks to our friend Michelle for suggesting this, because it was genius.
Bonus: it was super simple.
We started with a tiny bird bath from the fairy garden section at Hobby Lobby ($2.49 — we love a budget-friendly magical artifact) and filled it with colored resin.
That's literally the project.
Despite this being a very beginner-friendly craft...my sister was absolutely convinced she could not do the resin part herself and insisted I take the lead because I had "more experience."
I would just like the record to show:
I have never worked with resin before in my life.
Apparently watching resin videos on YouTube counts as hands-on experience now — at least according to her.
She picked up an epoxy resin kit on Amazon.
Following the directions included in the kit, we mixed the resin in a small clear container. To get that dreamy, swirly blue Pensive look, I scraped powder off a piece of blue chalk and mixed it in.
This created a soft blue tone that — once poured into the gray bird bath — gave us that perfect silvery-blue magical water effect we were hoping for.
We poured the resin intot he basin and let it cure on a flat indoor surface for a few days.
Note: After pouring the resin, I noticed the bird bath wasn't completely level.
Because of course it wasn't.
We improvised by sticking a popsicle stick under one side to balance it out so the resin would cure evenly.
High-tech solutions only in this household.
Creating a miniature Harry Potter pensive for a fairy garden is honestly such a fun and easy project. It doesn't take much time, it's beginner friendly, and the finished piece adds such a magical little focal point to the space.
My sister is already planning more additions, so we'll definitely keep sharing updates as her wizarding garden continues to grow.
Stay tuned for more tiny magical chaos.
