DIY FURNITURE MAKEOVER

Hello, DIY-ers! Today, we have a fun post that I think you will LOVE! We are going to show you how to take a simple, outdated piece of furniture like this...

And give it a chic update, like this...

Talk about and incredible transformation, right?! Basically, we sanded down the old nightstand (which Kaitlyn got from the Deseret Industries Thrift Store for just $15), removed the handles, primed and painted it, added a coat of polyurethane, put lace on top, and added new handles. All of these small tweaks made a BIG difference, and Kaitlyn loves her old-turned-new nightstand! Step : Thoroughly clean the piece of furniture (and maybe sand it if it's wood). You'll want to take the drawers out.

Step 2: Don't forget to remove the handles from the drawers, too.

Step 3: Prime the furniture to ensure the paint "sticks" and goes on evenly. We used the Krylon Primer in "White," which we picked up at Hobby Lobby for about $3.59 with a 40% off coupon.

Step 4: Pick the color of paint you want to use in either an eggshell or matte finish (a lovely employee at Home Depot recommends these finished for furniture--you can give it a glossier shine with the polyurethane after painting). Kaitlyn wanted her nightstand to be a deep purple, and after MONTHS of consideration (honestly, I cannot believe it took her so long to pick between three nearly-the-same paint colors), she chose "Plume" from Behr. A quart was enough for her small nightstand.

Step 5: Prop the legs of the nightstand on some...um...what are they called? Yellow triangular thingies? Or baby pyramids with circle cut-outs? I don't know, but they basically just allow you to more easily paint the bottom of the legs, and they look like the picture above.

Step 6: Go ahead and stir the can of paint, and start painting!! You can use a foam brush, and it will probably take at least two coats. I think we wound up doing three. Just make sure you allow proper drying time between each coat, read the directions on the can--about two hours.

Step 7: Give the furniture extra dry-time (24 to 48 hours should suffice), and then add a coat of polyurethane to "seal the deal," give it an extra layer of protection, and add a gloss!

Step 8: Find some lave (Kaitlyn got some at JoAnn's on the bolt) and use some Mod Podge to stick it to the top of the furniture. You really want this to stick down tight and smooth--so, a thicker layer of Mod Podge is better than a thin one.

Step 9: Cut any excess lace on the edges, so that it perfectly fits the top of the piece.

Step 10: Use the purple (or whatever color you use) paint and paint over the lace! One coat might be enough for this part.

Step 11: Finally, pick the handles/knobs you want to use (make sure they fit the width/holes that are already in the furniture from the old handles/knobs), and add those with a handy-dandy screw driver to finish the job! Kaitlyn's handles are from Home Depot, and the pretty pearl knob (which inspired her to add the lace because yes, she practically designed this thing around her love for the knob) is from Hobby Lobby.

And that's a wrap! We hope you love this project as much as we do! Actually, on second thought, I don't think it is possible for anyone to love Kaitlyn's nightstand HALF as much as she does. But, we hope you love it at least a third as much as she does!
