DIY HOCUS POCUS DOORMAT | "I SMELL CHILDREN" HALLOWEEN PORCH DECOR

Prepare yourself for another post in our Crafty Chaos series...

Kaitlyn and I are huge Hocus Pocus fans — like watch-it-every-Halloween, quote-it-year-round kind of fans. So when we decided to decorate her porch for Halloween, we knew we had to make a Hocus Pocus doormat. Obviously we had to go with the classic: "I Smell Children."

We started with a blank coir doormat (great for painting on). Kaitlyn picked up hers at Home Depot for about $11 — which is a steal compared to the $30+ pre-made versions you'll see online. There are tons of ideas for Halloween doormats out there, but making your own lets you customize the quote and design exactly how you want it!

Our design came from Cricut Design Space using SVGs we bought on Etsy. Sadly the shop we purchased form is no longer open, but there are still tons of Sanderson Sister hair silhouettes and quote SVGs floating around Etsy if you search for them.

We debated on what material to use for the stencil — vinyl or mylar. Kaitlyn didn't want to wrestle with a giant sheet of vinyl (her words, not mine), so we went with mylar sheets instead.

Because the mat was bigger than the mylar sheets, we had to cut the design into sections — the quote separate, and each sister's hair silhouette separate — so we could place them where we wanted.

Once everything was taped down with painter's tape, we started painting. We used Anita's outdoor paint in black and foam sponge dabbers from Walmart.

Fair warning: this took way more paint than we expected. One bottle was not enough — we ended up using about 2-3 bottles to really get the paint saturated into the mat fibers so the design would look bold and crisp.

We started with Winnie's hair silhouette in the middle, then measured and placed Mary and Sarah on each side so everything looked centered.

After all the painting was done and dry, we sprayed a protective coat of spray Flex Seal over the mat to help seal the paint and make it last longer outside.

Now we get to the part of the story where someone who shall remain nameless cough Kaitlyn cough left the mat outside to dry...

Which would've been totally fine...

...if her sprinkles hadn't turned on and soaked the entire thing.

So now there are a few white spots on the mat where the sealer reacted to the water. It's not ruined — you can still see the design perfectly — but let's just say next time I'll be supervising the drying process a little more closely.

Even with the sprinkler incident, I still think this doormat turned out super cute and perfectly spooky for Halloween. It looks adorable on her porch and adds just the right amount of Sanderson Sister engery.

If you decide to make your own Hocus Pocus doormat, let me know what quote you pick! Would you stick with "I Smell Children," or go with something else witchy?
