Prepare yourself for another post in our Crafty Chaos series...
Kaitlyn made this beautiful wall hanging ornament and I wanted to share how we (but mostly she) made it!
She originally picked up this wood wall hanging ornament at Wood Connection a few years ago — because she has a slight habit of buying crafts...and then not circling back to them until years later. I can't say much though, because I sometimes do the same thing.
I'm not sure if Wood Connection still carries these specific ornaments, but I have seen similar sized ones at Hobby Lobby for $6.99 (and at the time of writing this, they were on sale for $2.10 — which is a steal).
First, Kaitlyn painted a band across the ornament using Folk Art Metallic Gunmetal paint. She also painted the edges of the ornament, continuing the same metallic band all the way around.
Using a square guilting ruler, she marked a clean line across the top of the ornament to map out where the cap would be.
The top, bottom, and sides of the ornament were then painted with Delta Ceramcoat Black paint to create contrast against the metallic center band.
We picked up some textured metallic gold fabric on clearance at Hobby Lobby (shocking, I know). Kaitlyn cut strips to line both the top and bottom edges of the metallic band, and also layered pieces onto the ornament cap for added dimension.
Kaitlyn also picked up a pack of small wooden snowflakes from Hobby Lobby — regularly $3.99, but on sale for $1.20. We painted the snowflakes using Delta Ceramcoat Tompte Red paint.
While the snowflakes were drying, Kaitlyn added a D-ring hanger to the back of the ornament. She actually ordered a big pack of D-rings off Amazon a few years ago since she uses them so often, but you can easily find them at most hardware stores too.
Once the snowflakes were dry, we sprayed them with Gorilla Glue Spray Adhesive and coated them in a maroon glitter called Crimson (also from Hobby Lobby — regularly $3.49, but on sale when we grabbed it).
When the Mod Podge dried, it was time to attach the snowflakes. Kaitlyn laid them out first to decide on placement, then glue them onto the metallic band using Gorilla Wood Glue.
Next, Kaitlyn 18-gauge gold wire around the ornament cap to add even more texture (regularly $2.99, but on sale for $0.99 at Hobby Lobby).
Is it just me, or have I mentioning Hobby Lobby an excessive number of times in this post?
Lastly, Kaitlyn added some gorgeous ice crystal picks to the top of the ornament for extra character. These were actually two separate picks that she cut apart using wire cutters.
